How to Hide the Secondary Navigation Menu from Students in a Single Activity Format Course in Moodle LMS

Posted in: Moodle LMS, Technology | 0

Ever noticed how students can get distracted by too many navigation options in your Moodle LMS Single Activity Format course? A cleaner interface means better focus on learning content. With just a few clicks, you can hide the secondary navigation menu and create a more streamlined experience for your students.

This simple adjustment can help reduce distractions and ensure students concentrate solely on the course content.

Important Notes

  • This setting must be configured individually for each course.
  • The change affects only the student view - teachers, managers and administrators will still see the full navigation.
  • Administrator, manager or teacher access is required to make this change.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Navigate to Your Course

Log in to your Moodle LMS site and access the specific course where you want to hide the secondary navigation menu.

2. Access Course Settings

In the main Course menu (typically located in the secondary navigation of the page), locate and click on the Settings option.

3. Find the Appearance Settings

Scroll down the settings page until you locate the Appearance section, then click to expand it and view the additional options.

4. Disable Gradebook Visibility

Within the Appearance section, find the Show gradebook to students setting. By default, this may be set to "Yes," which enables the Grades link in the secondary navigation menu. This is what causes the secondary menu to appear.

Change this setting to No to prevent students from seeing the Grades link, which effectively hides the secondary navigation menu.

5. Save Your Changes

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click one of the available Save buttons (either "Save and display" or "Save changes") to apply your configuration.

Result

Once you've completed these steps, students enrolled in the course will no longer see the secondary navigation menu when viewing the course's single activity. This creates a cleaner interface and helps students focus exclusively on the learning content.

Additional Information

  • The change takes effect immediately after saving.
  • This setting can be reversed at any time by following the same steps and changing the gradebook visibility back to "Yes".
  • If you manage multiple courses, remember to repeat this process for each course where you want to hide the secondary menu.

By following these simple steps, you can streamline your Moodle LMS course interface and create a more directed, distraction-free learning experience for your students.
